What makes you proud to be an American?
The Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors an annual essay contest in honor of Veteran's day. This year's theme is "Are You Proud of Your Country" Your task: Write an essay between 300 and 400 words in which you explain why you are proud of your country. Guidelines:
Suggestions for Organization: A. Write as a traditional explanatory essay: give your reasons and support them with clear examples. B. Start with your own experience in a narrative and explain why it makes you proud to be an American. A few Graphic Organizers to help you plan: 3 Paragraph Essay Outline (in word) 3 Paragraph Main idea Graphic Organizer (printable) 3 Paragraph Essay Graphic Organizer (printable) Do your prewriting in any way that works for you! One of the best ways to draw your reader into your narrative is to expand the moment.
Here are some ways to expand the moment that we brainstormed in class: -Use sensory details to describe -Create a snapshot (a picture in the reader's mind with words) - Use dialogue to show a conversation - Break down the moment into smaller pieces, then describe - Write a thoughtshot (a picture of what the narrator is thinking), using inner dialogue, flashbacks, or flashforwards. You have several options for prewriting for your personal narrative. On my class resources page, I posted a few choices for graphic organizers. Look at them to determine which one will work for you. You can print or type right into them.
If you'd rather prewrite without an organizer that's fine-- but make sure you have these details down: who, what, when, where, and why? What is the purpose of your narrative? How will you tell your story? Still stuck on what to write about? Think of a person, place, or object that is important to you. Try to find a story that you can tell about that person, place, or object. Click here for some questions to prompt you. Dave is really annoyed one morning because on the way to school, his sister insisted on playing her Justin Bieber cd on full volume. He doesn’t like listening to Justin Bieber—he prefers classic rock music. In writing class that day, Dave writes a blog post about how much he hates Justin Bieber’s music and style.
Kelly, one of Dave’s classmates, reads his blog post. She’s a huge Justin Bieber fan, and she is offended by his criticisms. How could he say such mean things about her favorite singer’s hair and clothing? She posts the following comment on his blog: Don’t be such a hater! You just hate him because your hair is so ugly. Questions:
Blogging is a pretty recent genre of writing, and the blogosphere (the blogging community) is a new one.
As you enter the blogosphere, think carefully about how you will present yourself online and about how you will interact with others. Read About.com's 3 Rules for Blogging. You can also get ideas for what to put on your blog.
